musing
I went to an opening today at Brickbottom Gallery. The show was paintings, and 3 out of the 4 artists were former tenants of the Kendall Center. Also, a lot of the other people attending the opening knew me from the Kendall Center. I was introduced several times as a potter… I don’t think of myself that way at all anymore. Also, when people ask what I am doing now, I can hardly even say- Dolls. When I do say it, I feel like it is almost a challenge… like OK- now say something.
What I hate most that people say- “dolls are always so creepy…” huh?

“You make dolls?”
Like saying,”I am from Planet Mars.”
“Dolls are so creepy….”
Since when?!
You get MONEY for them?
No…I trade them for cattle. Of course, I get money for them.
“So what are you painting these days?”
“Dolls.”
And so it goes…when an artist changes genres and the doll becomes the art.
My favorite:
“What do you DO with them?”
Does anyone ever ask that of a painting? What is a doll supposed to do? What is a painting supposed to do? Something to muse about.
Thanks, Mimi, for opening a dialogue.

Dear Mimi-
I’ll bet they did NOT say YOUR dolls are creepy!
My kids make same comment, usually about antique dolls (worn hair, off eyes, faded clothes, etc. - as seen in horror films!)
I am interested to follow how successful you are in selling them, and, of course, prices (are these somewhere on website?), crass as that might be. I am not presently selling, but love your dolls and do hope you are getting prices you ask!
… now to check main page…
It is such a pleasure to be able to see your dolls online!
