inspiration at the V & A

I spent most of one of my days in London at the Victoria and Albert Museum.  Since I didn’t have to be concerned about anyone else being bored, I could spend as much time as I wanted pulling out drawers and looking at textile samples- mostly embroidery and lace.  My arms were actually sore at the end of the day!  Taking photos is allowed (unlike most US museums), but the dim light combined with the glass cases, made it almost impossible to get a decent photo.  These photos will at least remind me of the treasures I saw.

I have a page full of names of artists to research.  The day at the museum will give me a starting place to find more inspiration.  I love the internet!

My favorite piece at the V&A is a red and white cross stitch sampler made by a woman who ranted and raved about how miserable her life was. It measured 2 feet by 3 feet, or thereabouts. Is ir still on display?

That was quick! I loved the V&A when I was there years ago. Did the same as you, looking at all the textiles draw by draw. Did you like the sculpted stone creatures decorating the building outside? I also went drooling in Liberty :) Glad you had a great time.

I love the figures in the sampler. They look quite contemporary considering the work was done in 1660! I live in London and have not visited the V & A for about 20 years! I think I may be due to a revisit as I am inspired by the colourful sampler. I hope that you enjoyed your time in London albeit a short stay!
