limping along

Caution- whining ahead…  I’ve got a new computer. So why am I miserable? Getting a new computer seems to come with misery- I have it because my old computer failed. I lost tons of stuff. I feel totally inept because I don’t understand how this stuff happens. If I think I understand it, I am usually wrong… proven so because everything gets messed up again. I always lose the stuff I want and end up with all kinds of garbage that I should have thrown away months ago. Right now I am receiving email but can’t send any– (fixed- yeah! still catching up though) just in case you were waiting for a reply on something. New versions of everything are working in my computer so I am confused by everything I open. My blog- how do I upload photos anyway? Try pushing every button. I have gone from feeling totally comfortable with the blog to totally confused. I can’t figure out anything. My blog/news reader- lost all my subscriptions. I wonder how long it will be before I notice some that are missing.   That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Everybody is crabby.  Hope to get back on track soon.  I am posting some photos onto Flickr where my user name is mimik, since the link is gone from here.

  1. Hi Mimi,
I’m sorry about your computer. It does take awhile to get up and running on a new machine. Have you tried uploading photos to your blog through Flickr? That’s how I do it because my Mac is so old I don’t have complete functionality in Blogger. Good luck. M

  2. oh mimi… i am so sorry to hear. i don’t really have anything to offer except, and i am SURE you don’t want to hear this… backup? i don’t do it often enough, especially now with the blog and all the photos i have been taking but every once in a while i realize that it is a good thing. i have a seperate hard drive that is unplugged most of the time… but i like knowing it is there…. good luck. once you get more comfortable with the new machine i imagine you might start ‘finding’ things.

  3. I’m sorry that your old computer broke. I can tell you that we had the same troubles when we had to get new computers to replace the stolen ones. The thing that helped us (a little for me, and more for my husband) was having external USB back-up harddrives. His is a complete copy of his entire machine, so if anything goes wrong he can go back in time to the last version that was saved on that device. Mine is more for some folders. Some of these devices come with back-up software to make things easier. Lately I’ve been trying to be better about saving my pictures to either flickr or our personal web server. This way it’s not dependent on an actual computer at home, but is safely stored away on some machine in a data center. Good luck with reconfiguring your new computer … I’m still trying to get mine to work perfectly as well. :-)

  4. Yep, I went through this too recently. Took me a week to get everything working again. I also have an external USB back-up hard drive. I just back up the My Documents folder – everything is in there, photos, documents, spreadsheets. Hang in there, you’ll get through this soon.

  5. ..maybe the men at work can recover some things…just go slow and I am sure all will work out well. Hang in there.

  6. wish I can send Ove to you. He knows almost everything of computer. *sometimes I feel he knows too much of it*. We have experienced several serious crashes with our old computer, but everytime he can manage to get things back without actually logging in onto window system. (which is a magic to me. heheh)

If you old computer can still be start to Dos model, probably he can help to find some doc back.

  7. WAHOO!! my withdrawal from mimi blog is over! I have something to read again! I missed you!
