digression, chapter 3

and then my sister Tina came for a visit. We were suppose to work on sorting and clearing more of the papers and fabric I have in my house from our parents.

She brought up a carload (minivan) of fabric (hmm, great idea?)- fabric that my mom had insisted she take because they were “her colors”, even though she knew she would never use them. My sister had always planned on getting them to me, but I had forgotten all about them.
She stopped to visit her daughter who is an Interior Architect. Laurel threw a few bolts of designer fabric into the car.

Next, Tina spent some time with my brother and sister-in-law. Diane looked at the car and decided she had some fabric that my mom had given her over the years that she was never going to use- another load into the car. I am surprised the car made it up to Boston!

After sorting through the fabric I had already decided to get rid of and everything Tina had brought, here is a photo of the back of the car before we drove down to the School of Fashion Design of Boston to make our donation.

I am not sure that I ended up with less fabric. Here are some highlights-

Liberty and liberty type cottons-

flowers on linen and so sweet bunnies-

I think I bought that orange when I was in high school! And some great green tones-

This bird fabric is interesting- I don’t like the colors, but it is a design that looks so modern. So, I kept it… even though I don’t actually like it… hmm…

There is tons more, including 2 different colors of green coat cashmere- swoon! Now I need to figure out how to store the new stuff. And, we never got to much of the papers… I guess you’ll have to come back soon, Tina!
There has been a small amount of forward progress on dolls-

lots of dye work-

Hopefully I will have some finished work this coming week.

  1. Sometimes there can be too much of a good thing. Good idea to give it to the School of Fashion and Design of Boston. I have fond memories of buying Liberty of London fabric on one of my trips to London.

  2. I totally love that bird fabric, the colours are great, I don’t understand why you don’t like the colours! If you don’t know what to do with it, I would hehe!

  3. I just bought a second hand chest of drawers which I started to paint but had to stop due to the bad weather (It’s on the back deck). I needed it because I keep nuying fabric and supplies and had to find a new place to put it all. So my doll making has been scarce this week but I plan to make uo for it in a few days. Sometimes you just need to get other things done first. Looks like you are in that situation. I love the fabrics, in particular the rabbit print. The bird one is nice but I dont care for those colors either..maybe that will need a dye job:)
Look forward too seeing your new dolls.

  4. At least my closets are more spacious after the big purge! I’m so delighted that you’re keeping some of the fabrics I brought up. It feels like a little bit of family history moved up to your house.

And I would have gotten more done on the papers if I could have stopped reading everything I touched. Reading those love letters from Dad to Mom made my entire trip. With the advent of electronic and telephone communication, love letters are likely a lost art. That’s very sad, and I am so grateful that we still have those ones.

  5. I can so identify with this! I inherited my fiber addiction from my mom and it is always a challenge to keep under control!

  6. It’s so easy to get waylaid isn’t ? But at least this is a fun way to get waylaid, I mean a van of fabric, heaven.
