It’s snowing… how weird is that? Monday flowers, Friday snow.

There are some flowers I need to grow because they have such great names- Love in the Mist (Nigella) comes to mind. This is Exotic Love or Mina Lobata or Spanish Flag. The garden has been wonderful this year and is still beautiful- very unusual for late October.

We like to go out and walk in the woods and use mushroom hunting as an excuse. It was a beautiful day today and we stopped in Sudbury and went walking. I saw this about 20 feet from the path- we weren’t sure it wasn’t a soccer ball! It is a giant puff ball- apparently this is a small specimen! We were amazed though. BTW- it is edible, but didn’t taste good according to Ben.

my bit of the tropics- brugmansia

dahlias

lespedeza- clover bush

Purple hyacinth bean
and now- Mango in the garden…

hrumph!

I made socks. Striped T-shirt from Salvation Army, over-dyed… I wanted a yellower color, but this works for me. I have a vague idea for shoes at this point.

Beading on the cape- lots of birds. I have been working along the edges, using some of the techniques I learned at my beading workshop in April- Cool!
The air conditioning is in and on in my attic workspace now- very inspiring during the hot weather. Thanks Ben!
The poppies are just about over in the garden. I ‘ve been pulling out and composting the discolored and drying stalks and trying to fill in where the spaces are glaring. Some of the holes get filled with growing plants- the dahlias and canna, nicotiana and verbena. I’ve put some salvia “Indigo Spires” in some of the other spaces.
I am off to Connecticut for the weekend. Family visit.

I am amazed every year when this tree blooms. It just seems unbelievable that this tree can survive in Boston!

The garden is amazing right now. It seems as though all the plants are blooming at the same time! Everything that survived the terrible winter is trying to prove something by going all out this summer.
I love the poppies when they bloom- they look so messy until they do- I am sure my neighbors wonder why I’m not weeding more, but then suddenly they are blooming everywhere and people stop their cars and ooh and ahh. Usually they continue for about 3 weeks. These are annual poppies and spread their seeds all over so they bloom in cracks in the sidewalk and other odd places that the wind and the rain carry their seeds. They are traveling around the neighborhood.
The second photo is Monarda- it can be weedy and wild, but smells so nice when I am pulling it out!
The daylilies are starting up now and they all are looking very promising- the ones that aren’t blooming yet have lots of buds. It has been a good season so far for everything in the garden.
There are lots of photos of my garden here, and the pictures I took today start here– in case you ever wonder what grows in Boston, MA.

I won’t have much tiime to work on the dolls in the next few weeks- costuming for Snow White will be keeping me busy. Today I have been working on finding surfaces in my attic work space… E is home from school for a month and so I had to clear my stuff out of her room. As I work on organizing the mess, I am faced with so many unfinished projects- heads waiting for bodies, naked, hairless dolls waiting for clothes. So much potential! I got a bit side-tracked in my cleaning and sewed the arms and legs on Miss Columbia. She looks much better now.
The pictures of the day are from the garden, which looks wonderful even when neglected-

This is a bush clematis that I grew from seed about 5 years ago. It grows to about 15″ tall and can be floppy, although this one is staying very upright without any support.

Iris- Madame Chereau. It is the oldest named variety of Iris (1844) and is one of my garden heirlooms. I got it from my Mother-in-law, who got it from her Mother-in-law.

Iris- “Flight of Butterflies”

Allium- “Purple Sensation”

Allium Christophii

Hellebore

It must be spring- this crocus was blooming in front of the house yesterday.
On Saturday we went to Logee’s for some tropical air and a reminder that flowers will be blooming eventually. There is lots of color inspiration there.
