I worked on these all day yesterday. Stuffed with wool. Wool dust is everywhere now. Sewed closed on the back-
Next they got their sexy figures and a start on their faces. I put pins in for their eyes before I embroider them in. It makes them seem more alive.
I’m very fussy with the faces so I do a lot of picking out stitches. The purple/lilac body doll is one of the fairies from the first series I did in February. I embroidered a face, gave her some hair and embellished her with trim… but it wasn’t working for me. First she sat around for 5 months or so, then I took off the trim. More waiting then off with the hair, and finally yesterday, as I was working on these other ones, off with her face. Here we are, starting over.
And another. I am happy with the lips and the noses so far today. I am working on the eyes. Next it will be eyebrows and hair.
Wonderful sexy figures and expression. Love that embroidered fabric.
oh, mimi! they are gorgeous!!! you do such wonderful faces!

I am always amazed how beautiful they turn out. Your dolls don’t have all the frills but in their simplicity there is so much of beauty.
very random question here, but i am wondering why patterns always have you do the stuffing first and then the embroidery. i see you go in that order as well. but i feel like it would be easier to be embroidering on details before stuffing? is it that it would change where they are once it’s stuffed? but how do you figure out what’s happening on the back if it’s already stuffed? or do you just ignore that?
Heavens Mimi, you brave woman. I am terrified of unpicking embroidery in any form. I always make such a mess. It’s like trying to undo a tattoo! How ever do you do it?
Love those sexy figures. So suggestive.
I always stuff first because the stuffing process changes the shape of the piece and the features can end up in the wrong places. I am very picky though… I know of other people who always embroider first… In terms of the back of the piece- once it is stuffed it is no longer the back of the piece but the inside- does that make sense? All my knots and ends don’t show. Unless you are using a sheer fabric (which I’m not, phew!) … oh so many problems! As long as the stitches don’t show, or loosen up and come out, I don’t care what the inside looks like. Another thought- if you are doing embroidery where placement isn’t crucial, like an all over pattern on a dress, let’s say, I can’t think of any reason not to do it first.
My personal bit of advise- do what feels right and works for you, don’t worry too much about the directions. It is suppose to be fun. Maybe you’ll figure out a really fantastic way to do it!
i love those lips too…these are so beautiful already!! but of course i can’t wait to see them when they’re finished
They are lovely. You made me smile because I do the same thing-putting pins in where the eyes go. And, like you, I always use eye appropriate colored pins. I stick a pin in where the mouth goes too…pink or red. :-)
