big man 7- boyfriend 2

hmm, my numbering system is getting away from me. As I worked on the last batch of postcards, I was also thinking about and starting these boyfriend dolls-

wip men

this is the first of the 4 to get done-

big man 7

I tried a different way to make his face – I’m not sure if it looks too much like a mask? Is it weird looking? I made a flesh colored head and then added the hair and face after. In the earlier men, I made a hair colored head and sewed on a face.

The beige check is recycled cashmere from a poncho (actually sort of a short cape) of my mom’s. She made one for me too- it was brown and white checks. I wore it in Junior High School. I still have it up in the attic somewhere- it has buttons with horses on them- I loved that when I was a kid.

and here are some pics of the others in progress-

  1. i love *everything* you make, but I would say yes, it does look like he’s wearing a mask! from far away it looks normal though.

  2. He’s just lovely, doesn’t look like a mask at all. He just looks like a bit old Clarke Kent type. Nice and a little nerdy.

  3. Mimi, I really enjoy your “Boyfriend” dolls an fond your work so inspirational. I am especially intrigued by Emma who is so well formed and defined for a 33″ doll.I recently came into a stash of vintage fabric, velvets and fur pieces (nice friend) and hope to design a larger doll to show off these gems. I notice that you used a stiffer fabric for the body, duck, I think. I wonder how decorator remnants would work? (I have a lot). Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, Anne

  4. Ah, your handsome boyfriend dolls! Who wouldn’t want to answer the door to see one of these dashing men bearing gifts?! :-)

  5. Hi Mimi…these look so wonderful! An applique ear, maybe? I think he looks pretty fantastic as he is, though. Love, love the texture of hair (and sideburns…ha ha).

  6. Oh Mimi, what a delightful idea! I want one of these gentlemen – all dressed up, bearing flowers and candies – what woman wouldn’t?! From the side the face does look a little like mask, though I may not have thought of it had you not asked. From the front, it look great. I love your work!

  7. I think these guys are wonderful–but i do think it does look a bit like a mask. I would try and keep the head and face fabric the same–is that possible?
The yellow and brown combo waiting in the wings looks like it is going to be a good one!
