other winter related stuff

The resident house cats are finding winter to be very boring in the house. Mango thought he’d take a taste of some of my doll hands. Luckily I was sitting right there when he gave it a try, so not too much damage. Actually, maybe he was trying to tell me that I wasn’t paying enough attention to him.

This is what my garden gnomes do in the winter-

They become weather gnomes!

Blizzard in Boston

blizzard

Hey, the snow really came! This is out our backdoor.

We live right up the street from the grocery store and every time there is a prediction of a snowstorm, chaos ensues. Yesterday our street was busier then the day before Thanksgiving. The store’s parking lot was full and people were parked all the way up the street. It’s funny really. Many times the storms amount to nothing. This time the forecasters were right! We’ve got at least 20 inches and lots of drifting. It is too high to clear it with the snowblower.

kitty #2

grey cat

Here she is, all dressed. Well, she probably needs a bow or a hat, but I’ll wait until I find the perfect thing. Isn’t this fabric just exactly right?! I only had a little bit, but managed to make the dress-

fabric

It has been very cold for the last week. That and a $50 increase in our electric bill, which I can only imagine came from using my space heater in December, has inspired me to move out of the attic and downstairs to Eleanor’s room, now that she is back at college.

room

So far today, it has meant a lot of running upstairs to find buttons or thread in the colors I need.

2 cats

2 knit cats

I’ve got another one knitted but not dressed. That ring around the neck is just a piece of paper for her dress pattern.
I made the nose on this one in a different way- the orange cat has a nose made like a heel of a sock, the black cat has a nose like the shoulder increases on a top-down raglan sweater! -then deceases. Now does that make sense to anyone but me?! I am working on a third one, grey this time, and trying the sock heel method again. I like it better. I am trying very hard to keep track of what I’m doing in a notebook… that is really not part of my nature.

yarn project

Remember that dyeing project I was working on a few weeks ago? I decided that the skeins still looked too blue and after a few days of thinking about it, over-dyed them again- this time the full immersion way, in a pot on the stove- more Cushing Aqualon yellow (a sort of greenish yellow).

knit swatch

This swatch is knitted from the center of the skein. The outside yarn is much greener then the inside yarn, so hopefully the knitting would get progressively more green as I went along. I’d like to make a cardigan with this yarn… I am pleased with how it came out.

My softie knitty kitty

Here he is-

Knitkat

and now ready for winter…

knitkat2

He is 12 inches tall.

I am making another one and trying to write down the pattern. I’ve got the head and torso done, but it isn’t coming out at all the same – :-)
Pretty soon I’ll have a whole litter of kittens because I want to make a mohair one and a black one, a long skinny one and on and on! Sooner or later I might get a pattern written down and working.

cat softies

Loobylu has a Month of Softies project that anyone can join in on. This months theme is vintage catwalk. I have been thinking about participating this month.

Over the years I have done a lot of “cat art”(?)…

I am going to try to knit a kitty- knitted stuffed animals always have a vintage look in my eyes.

I was really pleased to find this image-

in Meggiecat’s blog… which I found through In a Minute Ago– a treasure trove of valuable links and information! The blue sweater is excellent!
