and other stuff

I forgot to mention this the other day- I got a nice email saying that I had been nominated to be a featured website here at Indie-O-Rama. I tend to be a bit dense about this kind of stuff and I don’t really get what this is all about, but it looks like a new site geared toward promoting independent web-based art/craft businesses. I guess I qualify and I am very pleased!

Yesterday I went to the RISD Alumni Sale in Providence, RI. It was fantastic- the artwork, the crowds, the people. I saw Teresa of Sewing Stars. And I actually introduced myself! I bought one of her fantastic owls-

and her pattern book which I had been meaning to get, but forgot about. I am very interested in how different people put together patterns.

I was so pleased to finally meet Megan in person- I’ve been online friends for a year or so. I loved seeing her work too-

I also saw a few other people/artists I know that I wasn’t expecting- such a nice surprise. It was such a perfect day and I hope everyone made tons of money!

When I got home, there was an envelope from Eleanor- this is what she sent me-

patch

does she have my number or what! She found it here at Microcosm Publishing, which she found via Zack’s blog. Thanks everybody, for being part of presents for Mimi. Now I need to go find something to attach it to…

Hope everyone is having a great Columbus Day week-end.

happy days

Some good stuff has been happening lately.

On Sunday, Mary, of A Saloia fame, came over to see me. She is with her family in the Boston area and so we were able to meet up. We sat around in my studio, looking at fabric, chatting about doll-making and blogs, among other things. Then we wandered down the street and went to my corner fabric store where we each managed to find something we “needed”. Now I have some pretty fabric bits that will remind me of our afternoon together when I use them.

I have finished up my atc’s for Kirsten’s Bird atc swap. I made 10 and 6 will be sent off to Minneapolis. I still need to make the little envelopes. They are always fun.

On Tuesday, I was the very grateful recipient of a treasure trove of embroidery threads- Mostly wool (about 200! skeins) but also some wonderful embroidery thread called Danish Flower Thread. It is a matte, vegetable-dyed thread (I don’t know if that is the right word?) in beautiful soft colors. I love sewing with it. Lucky, lucky me!

And lastly, one of the reasons I’ve been doing postcards recently , is that I have several friends who have been ill and need them. I went to see my friend in the hospital today. She was so much better then I was expecting and I can tell you, I am very relieved. I was so happy to be able to give her this card-

Now I have to do the other 9 and make another series!

postcards- house series

This is what I was talking about here– the last paragraph about doing sets. Ten postcards, house with window, a face in the window. The same, but all different. This way works better for me, I think.

I really need to find the manual for my camera and figure out how to adjust the setting so that the night postcards will not come out over-exposed. I hate seeing the rich colors and face details wash out… but I have an overwhelming need to post them anyway!

moo cards

has anyone else ordered any of these cards from Moo? I ordered up my free ones, then thought, What the heck, and ordered up another 100. If anyone wants to trade, send me an email or a comment. I won’t have them for another week or so, but figured I’d post about it before the free offer expired.

and lastly- boyfriend #5

Boyfriend 5-

I am pretty sure the wool fabric for the suit came from Abby. So beautiful to work with.

Such a sweet face, and soft too- it’s cashmere.

I have listed the available postcards at my Etsy shop. I am back to work on the postcards again- they are my current creative itch.

I plan on putting the boyfriends into the shop sometime in the next few days. I will post here when I get to it.

boyfriend 4

Here is the whole gang lined up-

and here is boyfriend #4-

I had a terrible time trying to get a decent picture with the colors even remotely accurate- I ended up using my Ott light in my studio. The red background is my chair. Still, things are a bit washed out.

His expression looks so sincere to me.

big man 7- boyfriend 2

hmm, my numbering system is getting away from me. As I worked on the last batch of postcards, I was also thinking about and starting these boyfriend dolls-

wip men

this is the first of the 4 to get done-

big man 7

I tried a different way to make his face – I’m not sure if it looks too much like a mask? Is it weird looking? I made a flesh colored head and then added the hair and face after. In the earlier men, I made a hair colored head and sewed on a face.

The beige check is recycled cashmere from a poncho (actually sort of a short cape) of my mom’s. She made one for me too- it was brown and white checks. I wore it in Junior High School. I still have it up in the attic somewhere- it has buttons with horses on them- I loved that when I was a kid.
