The pebbly quality of this baby makes me think of the Inuit myth about where babies come from: mothers must dig for them. Some mothers keep digging but never find their baby. :( It’s very poignantly retold by Geraldine McCaughrean in a children’s collection, 100 World Myths & Legends (published in the UK by Orion in 2001). I bought the book for my then 6-year-old and we read the book together spellbound. That story, though, really stuck in my mind. I think you’d enjoy it, Mimi.
