one fish, two fish

6 fish-

I needed some new fish. Between sewing fish faces, I’ve been sewing breasts onto lady dolls. I’ve got the air conditioner installed but I need a really good audiobook to listen to. I’m still feeling like I’m running on slow motion here.

  1. I highly recommend detective novels for listening – maybe Carol O’Connell’s Detective Mallory. I use them for knitting.

I love the fish! They are photographed like sardines packed in cans.

  2. Your work is just extraordinary, Mimi! Have you tried the (free) podcasts on iTunes? There are a whole lot of really great ones that are absolutely free. Just to name two that I’ve enjoyed a lot: The New Yorker has writers reading short stories of other writers they admire and The Classic Tales Podcast does some wonderful books in weekly episodes.

  3. I listen to podcasts from On Being and the Moth. Anything by Annie Dillard would sweep me along. Manhood for Amateurs (essays) or the Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. Anything by Neil Gaimon. Pullman’s His Dark Materials (even better the second time). Einstein’s Dreams is ethereal and lovely, tho very short.

    Stay cool.

  4. I LOVE your dolls, love the fish.

Great book recommendations, everyone! The Public Library has a great collection which you can order online… hmmm, well in NYC, anyway. I have been listening to Teaching Company tapes on music and history, also loved the Biography of John Adams by David McCullough – big surprise for me, I was never history buff, but Adams was amazing and his wife Abigail was equally amazing. Also, NPR has great podcasts – Radio Lab, Studio 360, etc.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is great on audio – narrated by a man & woman, alternating. Also “the Secret Life of Bees” and “Eat, Pray, Love.” Oh, and “Proust was a Neuroscientist” by Jonah Lehrer – incredible! There is also the Living Hero Podcasts at http://jari.podbean.com/

Linda, I like your idea for a Maker’s Book Group facebook page, where people can leave recommendations! I hope you will create i.
