kitty 10

I was having a heck of a time this morning, trying to find light in the right place to photograph this guy. It was way too cold and windy to try outside. I made this kitty before Christmas, but never finished him up. Yesterday I gave him a new face, a vest and a book bag.

I love the bow tie. I think it goes well with his vest. He is made out of a boiled wool sweater. When I washed it, it became even denser and small- it was tight getting one kitty out of this perfect color wool. His book bag is wool felt.

and the inside of the vest-

here is another view of his whole self.

I keep thinking about entering the Softie Awards but have been holding back… I’m just not sure I want to enter a contest. The Month of Softies was fun because it wasn’t about somebody winning. I am afraid I might actually care too much. I guess I’ll have to make up my mind soon- the deadline is Friday.

  1. He is the most dapper of cats, and just a young thing yet. Such a sunny polkadot surprise with the waistcoat lining. I love your attention to detail Mimi!

  2. I vote you go for it and enter! don’t look at it like a contest, just look at it as participating… but I bet you will win, your work is incredible. Can’t believe it is too cold to take photos outside, I have a problem where it is too hot to resin, it is over 40′ today which is over 100′ in your language ARGGGGG and resin doesn’t set well.. I am hiding inside under the air con. :-)

  3. Whether or not you enter, you are a winner in my opinion. From the first picture, I knew we had a MR. cat, full of verve and self importance. I suppose he has a pipe in the book bag, right?! Such a personality, I’m already making up stories about him.

About entering art in competitons… I’ve known both the joys of blue ribbons and the sorrows of being overlooked. Both tend to put the brakes on my artistic process for a while; either way, I feel stuck… the flow of my work disrupted. Also, I notice when I’m thinking about entering a piece, I tend to hold it away from my heart and judge it more critically, getting more uptight about it and changing my relationship to it in a slightly negative way. That’s my 2 cents for today… But back to my opening comment… whichever way you decide, your dolls are winners!

  4. Hmmm…. makes me imagine what books this kitty would carry in his bookbag… Puss ‘n Boots? although somehow I feel like this guy is ready to roam, so it might be The Accidental Tourist! He does look so very sophisticated with a vest and tie. Probably not the sort of cat who rolls over and says, “rub my tummy,” more likely the sort who seeks attention on his own terms.

Regarding the competition, do what adds pleasure to your life. If entering would enrich your daily life, go for it. If the deadline would stress you out, just enjoy looking at what other people submit. Either way, you win!

    Talk to you soon!

  5. Mimi, he is wonderful! I agree with Sonya, he is quite dapper! And that book bag, oh my. I would love to have one in my size!!

Your work, as always, just awes me!

  6. What a fabulous cat! Sure has character! He looks purrfect from here, (my god this is so un-original!) I like the “givig him a new face” bit.
I know what you mean about competitions- just go with the flow, and don’t forget that it’s what makes you happy that counts, crafting and enjoying yourself.
