Art Party Central

I am participating in an Art Party Central event, this coming Saturday at 2:30 and 5:30 Eastern Time. Would you like to come and join in the fun? RSVP here! Or go to the site and RSVP from there. Why should you come? Because you will get a 10% off coupon for MY SHOP and might even win a $50 gift certificate!!! I will talk about my work for a least 5 minutes (lol) and show details of the work. You can ask me questions. And you can see some other amazing artists- it is a virtual Zoom Craft Fair. I’d love to see you there!

Bisa Butler At Chicago Art Institute

I’m back from Chicago! We drove out from Boston, 3 days driving each way, and then a week in Chicago. We went to Alfred, NY and visited one kiddo, then to Cleveland (never been there before) where I saw Lake Erie, then onto Chicago where the other 2 kids live. I want to tell you about an amazing show we saw at the Chicago Art Institute.

We saw the art quilts of Bisa Butler. Here is a link to the info at the AIC where there are other pics from the show and also video interviews. I took detail photos of the work, not pictures of the whole pieces. Look at the AIC site to see the whole. I was so fascinated by her use of fabrics and colors and that is what I wanted to remember and study further. Some of the photos are not as sharp as I’d like so sorry about that.

A close-up of how she quilted the arm versus how the geometric pattern of the shirt is quilted.

All the colors in the faces.

The placement of the bold fabric patterns on the hat and jacket.

She uses netting (tulle) to create dimensionality in the skirt-

And there is her signature.

I just love this fabric with the clocks.

And the hair on this little girl- LOVE! Can you see that it is a 3-D organza rose fabric? I have a little piece of this fabric in red.

That’s all I’ve got. If you have a chance to see the show, I would highly recommend it. I will be thinking about her art for a long while.

2 Blue Fish

These 2 look rather formal in their blue and grey stripes.

I won’t be putting any of these into my Etsy shop until I am back in mid-June, but if you’d like one I can hold it for you.

Gold Fish is next

Well, maybe not gold- more russet or orange plaid.

The above fish has a head made from a knit and that always gives a much ore rounded shape than if I cut it out from a woven wool like the below fish.

Wow, May went by quickly

I spent most of this month sewing up man dolls of various sorts and not a lot got finished. I wanted to end the month with a finished something and success! I’ve got some fresh fish!

Two yellow fish pillows. Of course, once I decided to finish something, I got distracted and ended up sewing more fish… I just can’t help myself.

Here is a pic of my mermen in progress-

I will be taking 2 weeks off, starting in a few days. Then, when I get back, I hope to get to work on lots of new men and other dolls too. For now, a few more fish.

What’s been going on

Yes I have been working but doing the (kinda) boring stuff. I pulled out all the man skin parts (wow- that sounds REALLY weird) that I dyed way back in January and got to work cutting out all the other pieces needed to sew them together. Then, stitching them up. This is what I’ve got so far-

A pile of fellows in old-fashioned bathing suits, some ready to get kilts, some farmers, and some greenmen. I think that pile is about 20 future tattooed men. Today I started sewing up a group of mermen. After the mermen are sewed up, I will put them all aside for a bit. I’m going away at the beginning of June and I will wait until I return to get back to work on them. Lots and lots of steps…

I have also been putting time into my garden because of course, it is May! It has been a beautiful Spring so far and the garden is bursting. I’ve gotten started planting my dahlias, all my potted plants have moved outside, and I am sprinkling some annual flower seeds around the yard. I love this time of year.

Black Owl, White Owls

These are the last three. One black owls and 2 snowy owls. I’m not sure what comes next but I will figure it out by Monday.

Lots and lots of textures on these owls. Between the three of them, there is wool, alpaca, angora, cashmere, and mohair? So many wonderful fibers!

They will all be in my etsy shop by the end of today.
