70’s emersion

I was down in Connecticut again yesterday- doing some more clean up at my parents house. I came home with a car full of 1970’s! I think my mom stopped throwing anything away in 1975. I am reliving my youth, looking through all the old magazines. I found most of a year of Ms. Magazine 1975- 76. Also some copies of Better Home and Gardens, Family Circle, Woman’s Day, and Glamour. There are French and English Fashion magazines and Vogue sewing books- those magazines that have all the patterns in them. I also brought home about 50 more Vogue designer patterns, probably 70’s and 80’s vintage- I can’t really tell. I am putting those up on ebay. I’m not sure what to do with the magazines after I look at them. Eleanor wants to have a yard sale to make money for traveling, so that might be where they go.

I also found some really good resource books on fashion history- one that I had been trying to find a used copy of! and buttons, fabrics, trims, family photos, and more. I always come home with some real treasures.

ego boosting

I had a very strange experience this evening. I was reading through my bookmarked blogs and came across my name twice! So weird!

Once, here at il Bloggo where she has links to pictures of artists studios. I love looking at other peoples work spaces!

Then again at the fantasticly linky blog Art for Housewives. She has a great list of links to all kinds of dolls.

Blog Birthday!

Hey, it’s been a year! I can hardly believe it. I am feeling proud of myself! :-)

I would describe myself as being a late adapter in anything technological and also rather phobic about writing, and I have managed to not only do this for a year, but have really enjoyed it. I have looked back to see the finished and the unfinished projects… the finished one got their own link, the unfinished ones are what I am thinking about. So now for a boring rehash-

There were the 2 dolls from antique patterns-here. I think I learned what I needed to know by sewing them together. Then I lost interest, and never felt the urge to dress them.

The gourd head dolls– well I finished the middle one. That turned into Sadie. The other two? Who knows, I might get back to them.

These guys never went anywhere. Not surprising… I’m just not interested in the whole polymer clay sculpting thing. Also, a scale I’m not inspired by.

I never bothered dressing these dolls that I made at WOW!04. Although I learned what I wanted to learn from the class, doing something from someone elses’ pattern and in someone elses’ style- not for me.

I find these bodies interesting. I actually finished 3 dolls from them- Autumn, Minnie and Tallulah, and have 2 dolls in progress. That is pretty good in my picture of things.

Now why didn’t I ever finish this recycled bag bag? Hmmm, gotta get on that.

I never did finish this bag either. Gee this list is getting kind of long.

I never got Golden Baby to a point that I was satisfied with. I recently showed him to a friend for a critique, which was very helpful. I think I know what I need to do now, so he might show up in the finished project file after all.

I have loads of things I consider active projects- 4 ladies– yeah I know there are only 3 in the picture.
And these 5 heads.
Also several knitting projects and softies and , and, and… so many projects, so little time!

Christmas nostalgia

We have pulled out all the Christmas stuff… so many memories. These broken little angels are from my childhood. My family had a whole group of angels playing instruments. They were part of the creche scene. They haven’t survived very well- they’ve lost arms, wings, haloes, instuments… one has even lost her head, but I can’t bear to part with them.

Unpacking the ornaments is full of memories and artwork of friends. So much stuff that has no other place to go gets put in with the Christmas stuff.

ornaments

this is a perfect example- a project I did many years ago. It was my (rejected) entry into a show called the cone box show… I filled the little box (approx. 3″ x 3″ x 6″) with clay babies. There were more… these are what are left. Sometimes we have tied them onto the tree.

Here are some doll ornaments. I made the angel for Eleanor’s first Christmas. The other 2 dolls are from the early 80’s, made by Martha Heller. I was at a friend’s house over the weekend and she had some of Martha Heller’s dolls also- a supergirl and a ballerina.

The tree is up and decorated. The kids have made treats. Julian’s specialty is chocolate covered pretzels. Eleanor made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

And then there is all the other stuff going on…the washing machine broke and I am working on felting presents- ahhh- disaster!!! Ben to the rescue! Read about the washing machine repairs and also our fun with mushrooms over on Ben’s blog.

Thanksgiving

thanksgiving

We had a great Thanksgiving- 12 people at the dinner table. The turkey was delicious- it was brined for several days before cooking- Recipe!
Holidays are the only time I seem to take my pottery out anymore- here is one of my serving bowls. It’s funny that many of the ones I own were the seconds- since they had flaws I couldn’t sell them in the galleries.

Roxbury Show

It was a very busy weekend. Here I am at the Roxbury show… trying not to grimace for the camera.

show

The show was pretty much of a bust in terms of sales, but was lots of fun because of the people I met. Everyone who came and talked to me was interested and enthusiastic. Who knows, maybe someone who took a card will get back to me. As I always say, I am much more likely to find a buyer when I take them out of the house then when they are sitting up in my studio.

Below is a photo of the mini dolls on the stand I made for them out of K’Nex. I knew there was a reason to keep them after the boys had out-grown playing with them!

trying to get organized

I have been working on the photo gallery for my virtual open studio, but after I took the first set of pictures, I realised you couldn’t really see much except piles of stuff (ADD decorating). So… even though I had originally thought that the beauty of a virtual tour would be that I wouldn’t have to clean up, that is exactly what I worked on all day yesterday!

I am always trying to be organized as I work, but it is a constant struggle. I make parts of the doll and then, a month later can’t figure out which of my patterns I used. As I work on the dolls, paper pattern pieces are always disappearing- where did this disappearing paper come from anyway??? When I sew the cloth pieces together and stuff them, they can change shape dramatically, so trying to match paper to 3-d form usually doesn’t work.

I have made a lot of baby steps towards being organized with the patterns. I have all my doll pattern pieces numbered and organized in a notebook in plastic sleeves. I mark the pieces as I cut them out- but that part of the fabric ends up on the inside so that doesn’t help. I have tried marking the dolls on the bodies, but it seems like messing them up.
This is my latest idea-

I got these file sleeves at Staples. I put every piece of pattern paper and muslin mock-up into it. I trace the body pattern pieces onto a new paper and put that in also. I could use the outside to make notes, but haven’t gotten there yet. I use it as a way of cleaning as I go along… just put everything in the sleeve and then when it turns out something I need is lost, well, I know where to look!

Mushroom hunting

10:9:puff.jpg

We like to go out and walk in the woods and use mushroom hunting as an excuse. It was a beautiful day today and we stopped in Sudbury and went walking. I saw this about 20 feet from the path- we weren’t sure it wasn’t a soccer ball! It is a giant puff ball- apparently this is a small specimen! We were amazed though. BTW- it is edible, but didn’t taste good according to Ben.
