more postcards- eventually

I am working on postcards now. But there has been so many steps between the intention and the end product! I spent a lot of last weekend, cleaning up in my studio. A friend was suppose to come for a visit and I realized it was so bad that 2 people could hardly fit in the room together, let alone actually sit down and visit. So- step one, find the floor-

floor

well, you can see I’ve already started to lay out new projects in that picture.
Step 2- cut out the sketches from my fabric sketchbook. I washed them because I used a water soluble chalk pencil on some of them. Here they are, drying on the edge of the bathtub-

Oh No! Now the floor is completely covered again!

I worked on the floor for a day- boy, was I sorry though. My back was killing me by evening. The next morning I cleared off a table (i.e. piled everything up on top of any other clear surface) and layed the project out so that I could sit at my chair and also have decent light.

ah, much better. And here we are today-

the floor is not too bad- at least I can move around and find stuff… Hopefully I’ll be able to show some finished postcards in the next few days.

One of the people in my doll club, brought this book, Kokoro no Te by Kumiko Sudo, to show us. I ended up buying myself a copy- it is fantastic! It has some inspired sewing kits- I might have to try making one, instead of just admiring the beautiful photos.

so late…

I’ve been so bad about showing you the wonderful package I got in the mail from Shobhana at My Life In Stitches. We did a trade.

one

Now I can look forward to winter and cold weather so I can wear these beauties!

two

And such beautiful wool for winter knitting projects. It’ll be here before I know it.

fat fairy 9- granny fairy

Here she is, the last of this series of fairy dolls. She is Granny fairy-

She has blue and grey hair and lots of fancy details-

a crown and ribbons-

and very special wings- 2 colors, ribbons and beads, long and drapey-

and side puffs instead of a skirt-

and here are all the ladies in the garden-

I will be putting them up on etsy later today. Next, on to the musicians!

And now- they are in my shop.

I am going flower crazy!

wip flowers

This is what I did with them all. This flower fairy doll makes me think of a 60’s hippy girl with flowers in her hair. Although I guess she really needed to be wearing tie-dye to make the look just right.

She even has flower feet!

And here is the back view-

I am going to try and finish the last of this group of fairy dolls and put them into my etsy shop on Wednesday. Now that I’ve said it, I’m commited, right? Guess I better get back to work!

fat fairy 7

Yesterday I thought I had finished this doll. I took a lot of photos and couldn’t get any that I liked. For some reason, my camera doesn’t do well with reds. But besides that, I didn’t like how the doll was looking. I finally realized it wasn’t the photos, it was the doll! Here are some photos from yesterday- the color is actually pretty close to true in these ones-

And here she is today after a little make-over-

I redid her hair-do and I’m a lot happier.

I’m still not satisfied with the photos though. arg!

fat fairy 6- Spring

Introducing the latest fairy. She reminds me of the colors of early spring.

ff6

I embroidered her eyebrows since her last appearance-

I made her hair out of old sewing thread. I have lots of old cotton thread from my mom and mother-in-law. Most of it is not useable on the sewing machine- it breaks too easily or is cut or one even had been scribbled on with crayon. I plied a number of colored threads together (including a pink and a green) and embroidered the back. The edging is a lot of the thread, twisted together and stitched in place.

and a side view-

I was fighting with the skirt. For some reason it wasn’t working right, so I turned it around and tied it in the front. Better! The green trim on her bodice edging is an old piece of trim I found in my parents’ basement when we were cleaning it out. I think it is probably from the fifties. I also used it on the chimera I made for Month of Softies, so long ago.

nothing in particular

Family get-together at our house. Julian, we missed you! The empty space at the end of the sofa is for me and my laptop-

and, we had some tree work done last friday. That guy was really high up. The yard is so much better now. I’ve been wanting to do this for 10 years.

Eleanor has been home (from Chicago) and is now delivered back to college. I visited the friends and relatives in Connecticut. Now I can get back to work and finish up some more fairies.

fairies- wip

I was hoping to have finished these fairies by today, but that is unlikely with family and life and house and all.

crown

free advise- don’t sew on an embellishment with lots of little beady things until you have finished all the rest of your sewing- your thread will get tangled in it with every stitch!

bust

I love making these little flowers.

hair

I am having trouble with this one’s hair- sometimes it feels like the doll is arguing with me… argh!
