man in a kilt

This is a first for me- a kilt. That means pleats. Always fun to do a little research.

The kilt is removable with buttons and a hook on the inside of the waist.

And I KNOW you are all wondering what is under the kilt. Well, Spoiler Alert!!!

Sorry for the terrible picture. I was putting this post together and realized that I’d forgotten to take a kilt-off photo. I took this one with artificial light and it’s pretty bad. But, you needed to see, right?

The reason (or inspiration) for the kilt was that I didn’t like how he looked in just his shorts. The toile fabric had more stretch than the cotton I used for his pants and once I stuffed him, I thought it looked oddly bulgy in places. So, inspiration hit! Honestly, that is really how it works.

a special lumberjack

Sometimes I will say yes to a special order or commission. When someone asks me to do something that makes it obvious that they understand and appreciate my work I am more likely to say yes. A tattooed lumberjack- Yes! A Christmas stocking with traditional tattoo images? Uh, no. (yes, that is an actual example that recently came through my inbox)

I love this guy!

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving if you are in the part of the world that celebrates. I think I made my best apple pie ever!

a pirate

I finished him. It turns out he is a pirate. I think it is the boots.

He is a patriotic pirate. He has Ben Franklin on his back and George Washington on his arm.

I used a blue variegated floss for his eyes so they are slightly different colors.

Isn’t this perfect for his hair?

I found this little buckle in my stash. Perfect.

Things don’t always go smoothly when I’m putting the dolls together. I cut this tattooed man out last spring and sewed him up at the end of May. Now I stuffed the body and did the face embroidery. I sewed the fingers and then stuffed the arms. I was about to sew the arms on when I realized they not the same size. At all. I put everything aside and went to Vermont.

Today I unstuffed both arms, back to the hands. Then I carefully retraced the pattern onto the bigger arm. There was a bit of fiddling on both, sewing, taking out, resewing. Fixing mistakes often takes much longer than you’d ever expect. And of course I don’t have enough fabric to just make new ones.

But, he made it through the reconstructive surgery. He did not end up in the pile of not-sure-how-to-fix problem dolls. Phew!

today’s tattooed man

I love this toile. I got a remnant of it off of Etsy, way back when I started making these fellows. I have now cut it all up. There are a few more dolls in the pipeline with this toile design and then all done.

I have been overwhelmed by the news coming out of Japan. I can hardly tear myself away from the newsfeeds. Some of you might know that I have a brother in Japan, but he lives in Kyoto which was unaffected by the earthquakes shaking. My heart goes out to all the suffering people.
