dr. fox

I’m in San Francisco now and I have several pieces that I never had time to post in all the rush of the last week. I will post them over the next few days. Of course if you’d like to see them in person, I am at the San Francisco Renegade Craft Market at Fort Mason this weekend, July 21 and 22.

I think he looks like a Dr. or lawyer from my childhood.

Here you can see his vest. That vest… I had so many problems with his vest!

The first fabrics I chose looked great all laid out together on the table. I made the vest and the jacket and put them on my fox fellow and it turned out that the fabrics weren’t working together AT ALL. That vest will wait for another customer. I cut out a new vest. I was turning it right-side-out and ripped through the paisley fabric (it is vintage and fragile in places). I tried fixing it 3 times instead of just starting over. I didn’t have enough of the fabric I was using with the paisley to cut out another side. I kept making all kinds of crazy mistakes. I think my brain left for vacation a few days early. Anyway, I eventually gave up on the 2nd color combination and cut out this new vest with some wonderful Heather Ross fabric. Just so you know, it doesn’t always go smoothly no matter how long you’ve been doing it.

More of the skeleton toile- I’ve got a good amount so it will be showing up regularly.

I am getting a few things finished but I seem to be spending all kinds of time doing boring prep work for the show– finding new tablecloths, buying another suitcase, spending half a day trying to find a box the right size to ship booth parts, then packing it and getting it mailed. It is amazing how time-consuming all of the invisible part of show prep can be. And I have a deadline for new prototypes but that is another story. So really, it is just my typical and expected pre-trip freak out around here. Luckily for me, one of the benefits of getting older is that I recognize my own patterns and try not to take myself and my anxieties too seriously.

new man

I am working on something new- I am trying to make an Afro-American brown skin man. I think he looks more Indo-Asian.

It’s not so easy to try something even slightly different. The first step was to get a decent skin color brown. I dyed fabric for 4 dolls. They all came out completely different and only 2 were usable.

Now I will have to work harder on the facial features and study mustache differences- because really, he needs to have a mustache!

Again with the wonderful skeleton toile.

I just finished another one. I’ll post photos of him tomorrow.

what’s up

I am in a weird twilight zone between Brooklyn Renegade and San Francisco Renegade. I will be in San Francisco in 2 weeks!

When I got back from Brooklyn, I had a very long to-do list. I’ve been working through computer jobs, travel planning and home sewing. I made new shades for the kitchen-

a nightgown, and a baby gift-

I’ve got a number of projects going on in the studio so I’ll have some dolls to show soon.

I am going to have to start haunting the thrift shops again- I need more fox-colored wools.

I’ve got lots on my mind. The SF show has a lot of little logistical problems that I have to figure out but it is all coming together. I’m excited!

I ought to be spending some time in the garden but it seems to be doing just fine without me-

I know that other parts of the country have been having a difficult summer, but the Boston area seems to be having the perfect Daylily weather. I have never seen them look so healthy and have so many flowers. Everything else is looking good too.

Two of my garden favs- crocosmia “Lucifer”

and poppies-

Brooklyn report

We had 2 beautiful market days. It was hot, sunny and there was a little breeze. Well actually, there were a few BIG breezes which were a tiny bit too exciting but my tent weights kept me safe. I was happily situated next to several friends which is so helpful when you need to borrow some little thing.

Here is the first day set-up.

This was the fantastic view out the back of my tent in the morning as we were setting up.

This is a few hours later- the grass was covered with sunbathing bodies.

Then on Sunday, I rearranged the dolls on the panels. I always think it might make a difference but really, it never does.

And packing up at the end of Sunday- the Brooklyn Bridge in the background.

We drove home yesterday (Tuesday) after having some recreational NYC time. We had a great time away from home. Brooklyn is such a fun place to hang out for a few days. I loved meeting blog readers (you know who you are and Hello again!), people who were seeing my work for the first time, and all kinds of enthusiastic Market goers. Today, I am back to work. I’ve got a lot of computer stuff to do- emails, etsy (I’ll be listing some of those dolls I finished up during the weeks leading up to the Market), blog stuff… all that not-studio work. My next big event is San Francisco Renegade, July 21 and 22.

off to Brooklyn

It’s here! This is the weekend!

I’ve got everything priced and tagged and ready to go (hopefully!).

I’m in Booth #15. I’d love to meet you in person if you are in the NY area!
