the weekend

The SOWA Holiday Market is usually 2 days but was only one day (Saturday) this year. People really wanted to come!

Apparently the line was like that for much of the day.

Here is my booth. (Sorry about the bad photo. My camera seems to be developing focus issues. Is a 3 year old digital camera geriatric?)

This is just one side but at least it is in focus-

The show was fun, busy, exhausting!

On Sunday I went to the Art Institute of Boston to see an amazing show– the work of Chris Sickels of the Red Nose Studio.

Sorry- more terrible photos. Go to his website to get a good idea of how incredible his work is. He makes these figures and then photographs them for his illustration work. I love seeing pieces like this close up and in person- the details of the stitches and fabric choices are what interest me most. The show is only up for a few more days but if you are in the Boston area, I would highly recommend it. And it is free!

I am planning on going to NYC at the end of the week so I can see the Luvable and Hugable Show. Is there any other shows I should go see while I am there? Any other general recommendations?

well that was really fun!

The Boston Bazaar Bizarre was so much fun!

Here is the Cyclorama at the beginning of the day. I was in the first group of vendors to load in.

and later-

My booth-

Thanks to all the friends that came and said hi, thanks to all the wonderful new people I met there and a HUGE thank you to the organizers who do such an amazing job. It is always fantastic to get out of the studio and hang out with other amazing crafty people- it was a great day!

this week

I’m working on some things that I can’t show and that is a bummer. But, look who came to visit me yesterday!

Salley! I was even able to uncover a chair for her to sit on. hmm, yes, the studio is a pretty big mess these days. I got to see her cover art for the January Horn Book magazine. There is no describing how amazing that piece is in real life. No matter how wonderful the photo turns out to be, it is not the same. I feel so lucky to have seen it!

And, here are some thrift goodies, all disassembled, washed and ready to go.

I believe it is a law of thrifting that if you are looking for something specific, you will never find it. Even if it is something perfectly ordinary- like the time I needed a plain white sweater. I could not find a single one in 5 different thrift stores. I am indeed looking for something specific- a gray wool fair isle sweater. I didn’t find one but found some other goodies. I’m not complaining. I now have a good excuse to do some more searching this weekend.

Lastly, I hope to have an update in the next few days about the Scotch and Soda copying/stealing situation. I appreciate all the support you have given me so far. Thank you.

the Chicago report

I had a fantastic trip- Thank you Chicago! I feel like I am still glowing from all the Midwest Love! People really did tell me that they read my blog and know my work- I’m glad I asked in that last post. I loved meeting everyone!

I flew out on Thursday and got to visit the workplace of my daughter. It was fun to see where she spends her days. We went to the taping of Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me.

Yes, Paula Poundstone is just as funny as I thought she’d be; actually funnier. The strange part of the evening- the man who sat next to me on the flight out from Boston? Boy was I surprised when he walked out on the stage…

It was Charlie Pierce. Weird.

On Friday I was featured in the RedEye, a Chicago free newspaper. WooHoo!

I had to go find myself a copy on the way to picking up the rental car. Besides that I spent the day doing errands, petting my daughters’ kitty, taking a nap. I was feeling vacation-y. Then on Saturday, we were up at dawn and running all day. And what a day it was! Eleanor (daughter) helped me all weekend and also documented the weekend- Thanks E!

This is one of the boxes I sent out to Chicago- ready to unpack.

Renegade was scheduled to start at 11am but people were all around the whole time we were setting up and were seriously looking by around 10:30 am. A little before 11, a very nice person came into my booth, we chatted for a while and then she introduced herself- do you recognize her?

Mary Engelbreit! Yep- I’m starstruck! That started the day out very nicely.

A little later-

Eleanor kept taking pics when I was eating- eeps! Here is the big picture-

I will post some more tomorrow- enough excitement for now, right?!

Great Weekend!

The tiny world class was great fun!

There were 6 of us around the table (including me). One of the participants was an enthusiastic 10 year old crafter who came with her mom. She did a great job and showed everyone else up by finishing first!

Here are a few shots of the finished projects-

I managed to forget to click on my macro function so all of the individual shots I took were out of focus. Thankfully other people took some photos and were able to send them to me-

There is another here.

And today was opening day for the South End Open Market. I love going down and seeing all my friends. And getting a cupcake.

Yum!

Now I’ve got some Tiny Worlds to finish and then more foxes. See you soon!

tiny world class

I’ve got a Tiny World class scheduled for April 30 and there is still space. I would love it if you could join in the fun. All the info is here, but these are the basics. You bring a tea cup and than get to play with all my materials and tools. Like my scallop scissors and my endless variety of felt and wool. It is loads of fun!
