party girl with smocking
I tried out some smocking on this dress. The smocking worked just fine with the wool and gave the waist a nice stretchiness.
I like how the edging came out here- very fancy.
The light in the studio-to-be room is amazing. I am going to start posting pictures of my progress- maybe that will help keep me on track.
etsy update, links
I have finished 2 more tiny worlds so I now have 4 finished. I will be putting them into my etsy shop this afternoon.
the latest 2-
– some great photos of my house from Jen, when she came to the workshop.
– I got profiled over here– I love her very original approach. An art in itself.
– I am thinking about attending the NIADA conference again this year. Anybody else? I hadn’t thought about it, but the other day, I was fixing my website links page (it had disappeared for some mysterious reason) and clicked on the site. I haven’t been to the last 2 and now I am thinking it is time again.
I am going in too many directions these days. My head is full of studio fantasy thoughts, lists of everything that needs to happen in the studio room before it is ready for occupancy (file this in “trials of living in an old house”), dolls, how to do printmaking without a press and stay true to my work… not to mention spring and gardening thoughts… and that is just the top of the pile. So, I end up spending too much time on the computer instead of moving forward with anything!
more tiny worlds
When I was getting ready for my class, I made various parts and I figured I might as well finish them up. So, there will be a few more tiny worlds in the next few days.
Big excitement of my day- I now have 2001 hearts on Etsy! I am feeling very <3 ed- hee hee!

more reportage…
Last Friday, my Boston Etsy street team- Boston Handmade, had a meet-up with Maria Thomas, the new CEO of Etsy.
Here is my photo of the event-
There are much better photos and a great recap here on the BH blog. It was so great to meet her- we all came away feeling that Etsy is heading in the right direction with a thoughtful and intellegent leader.
And there is more-
You know I love blogging. I’ve been doing it for 5 years now and it feeds something in me. There are lots of reasons to blog and lots of great things that come as a result… but I have to admit- presents in the mail can not be beat! What is better then getting an email saying “I found something I knew you would love” from someone you have never met in real life (see related story here!). This came in the mail for me last week-
Thanks Mary! You were right- I love it all!
There are various side benefits to scheduling a workshop/class at my house. It is like having your mother-in-law come to stay. The house gets cleaned up, projects get done. When I decided to do the workshop, I used it as an incentive to move forward on a stalled house project- the bedroom that will be my new studio some day. Yes, a room that actually has heat! Anyway, the room has been in limbo for … I’m too embarassed to tell you how many years. Various life events happened after I got started on it and then everytime I thought about getting back to work, I felt totally overwhelmed. Well, I have made great leaps forward.
It is not done, but it all seems doable at this point. Maybe I will be working in there by next winter. I am not going to go overboard with unrealistic expectations!
Cleaning up meant collecting things to go to the Salvation Army. You see, I have to restain myself from going- my rule is, I have to donate a bag if I want to go shopping. So, on Friday, as I was driving down to the meeting with Maria Thomas, I stopped by to drop off my bag and take a quick look. ooo, all knits, 3 for $1. I spent $3 and came home with another load of cashmere, angora and wool. Yum!
tiny world class report
I have so much to tell and now it seems like too much! I am so far behind so I will jump in and tell you about some fun stuff from the last week- in no particular order.
I will start with yesterday- the tiny world workshop. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN!!!
There were 7 “students”, plus me. Here we are, working at my dining room table-
further along-
and here are some of the tiny worlds, some not quite finished, at the end of the class-
Barbara-
Amy of Bumble Belly Designs. You can read her report and see more (better) photos here at her blog.
Brooke was very brave- she had no sewing experience but decided she wanted to give it a try- look how well she did!
Jen (her report) and Ginny (another blog report of our class)-
Becky’s- I only have a blurry picture of her adorable castle-
and Jane-
It was a great day. I will definitely do it again. Right now I am planning for August, since I had a request for then.
I will do another post with other blog-worthy news which includes- omg… a clean house!, house projects moving forward, a sale at my favorite thrift shop, and getting to meet the new CEO of Etsy- see you soon!
Coraline
girl with fish pinafore
another doll inspired by mermaids and Heather Ross fabric.
This was an interesting doll to work on. I put her body together before I received my Heather Ross fabric in the mail. When the fabric arrived, I realized that the color choices I’d made were not especially good for what I was hoping to do. If you look back at the wip post, you can see that originally I had thought about using different fabrics. As I was playing around, I pulled out my bag of orange cashmere pieces. I set aside a dark orange-red for this doll and also pulled out the bright orange to use on another doll. Well, the bright orange ended up on this little dear. Never, in my rational mind, would I have thought these colors could work together- but in the end, I couldn’t pull them apart!
Her hair is wool boucle fabric hair and the buns are made of wool felt balls. I love her face.
Here are all her outfit pieces- skirt, pinafore and vest.

And, the 2 girls together.
