Next stop- Purl in Soho. You know, purl bee in real time?

I !LOVE! this store- it is so pretty and inspiring and they have all kinds of goodies that look so tempting to try. The glow from the window works like a magnet on me! Above is the fabric store- Purl Patchwork and below is the yarn store.

And, lucky, lucky me! I had a gift certificate!

I felt like a kid in a candy store. I binged on felt- 100% wool in beautiful colors. They sell bundles– 8 selected colors, 8 x 12, gorgeous… how could I resist. It’s like having that new box of crayons or the new paint box- such perfect colors! I also picked out some of the bigger sheets and one piece of the hand dyed woven wool. But that’s not all! I’ve been meaning to get a copy of Jane Brocket’s book and there it was- perfect, onto the pile. And then to finish it off, some pearl cotton in my favorite colors- I’ve never seen them before and can’t wait to try them. Underneath it all is a canvas bag which I will happily be carrying my projects around in. Everyone can be jealous that I got to shop at Purl!

nyc report 2- Redhook

On Thursday morning (day 2) we headed out to Brooklyn again. This time we were going to visit Jen and Brian at their studio in Redhook. I can’t seem to stop myself from gushing… the area was incredible! So, lots of pictures-

nyc report 1

Day 1- we left Boston in a winter storm. It is becoming a habit.

We went on the BoltBus. It has wifi and that was great fun. I was very happy that I wasn’t the one driving in the terrible weather. We made it safely to the city and only a little bit later than scheduled.

The snow had turned to rain by the time we got to NY. We left our baggage at the hotel and went out again. First stop- Kinokuniya– the Japanese Bookstore. It is very close to where we were staying. I was hunting for some decorative package tape to liven up my Etsy packages. They have a great stationary department at Kinokuniya, but no luck with the tape. Lots of other very interesting things to look at though. Next was a walk through the Fashion District- always fun.

We stepped into a store full of magazines and because it was in the fashion district, I shouldn’t have been amazed when I realized that almost every one was fiber and fashion related. Wow! I picked up one magazine that looked interesting- embroidery in fashion- price $55- eek!

We were on our way to Brooklyn to see Disfarmer, Dan Hurlin’s newest puppet show. To add to the fun, we took a water taxi to get there. Everything in the city was wet (including us), shiny and beautiful  (not us). I experimented with trying to get some night photos- I’ve been inspired by the city photos of my Boston Handmade friend Kerry. I love the way she captures the feeling of neighborhoods. We made it to Brooklyn, had dinner, saw the show, made it back to the hotel… phew! What a day! That’s enough for now. I’ve been away from my studio for way too long and I’m hoping to get back into the swing of things today.

a crazy kind of week

let me see. We had loads of snow- that was last Sunday. I love it when it snows like this- it looks like cotton balls in the azalea bush.

The snow made for lots of icicles on every house-

There was the wonderful day of the inauguration. I loved watching it on TV and then a neighbor had a celebratory tea- such fun. The day took a turn though- a bit before 5 I got a call that my son had cut his hand at work and the rest of the evening was spent doing the adrenaline mom thing. Table saw + finger= bad combination. It really wasn’t bad but I totally freaked. My husband took him to the ER. I am such a wimp. I couldn’t even bear to hear him describe what happened. So now I will probably always remember that as part of Obama’s inauguration.

And, what else? I have been working very hard on a project that you’ll know about in a few weeks- so that is boring to blog about. I am planning to do a class on tiny worlds but have been too busy with that other project to post the info. I will try to do that tomorrow. And, lastly, I am going to New York City (and Brooklyn) next week- Wed. 1/28 to Saturday. Got any great ideas for what I should do or see?  I am planning to go to this embroidery show. And, if anyone is interested, I am always up for a meet-up.

the rest of the houses

that I’ve finished-

I had some thrift store fun today- a bag of woolies and more teacups. The local Goodwill makes me crazy because they separate the cups and saucers, so I find a perfect cup but the saucer is nowhere to be found- arg! But, I managed to find 5 which is actually pretty great.

I am thinking I might teach a class on making these tiny worlds- maybe at the end of Februaryish?  Are you local to Boston?  Would you be interested? Leave a comment or send an email- I am guaging interest at this point.

starting the new year right

2009 isn’t even one week old yet, but so far it’s a good one! On Sunday I invited Tracey over for a studio visit. She had commented on my blog a few times and I knew she lived near me. We got into an email conversation and I knew we had to get together. We did that wonderful blog friend thing where the conversation starts where so many other conversations would end. So much is a given when talking to another art/craft blogger- like how great the online community is and how clueless so many other people are about why we do it! We can move right on to other important stuff.

First, Tracey brought me this wonderful gift inspired by the interview in Craft magazine-

I’ve hung it up over my desk. Here is her description of the inspiration for the piece and also her report of the visit. I think it is too funny that she photographed all the doll bits that never got finished…

We talked photography (among other things)- she is doing some amazing work with ttv– through the viewfinder (tutorial if you are interested). It sounded intriguing and, of course, somewhere in this house I knew I had one of those cameras where you look down into the viewfinder. I’m pretty sure I bought it at a yardsale with a red leather camera bag that looked like a child’s doctor kit, in the early ’80s. Yep, there it was on the shelf in the living room. I tried looking through the viewfinder and it was so dirty I couldn’t really see anything.

I took out a few screws and cleaned it up as well as I could.

It is now significantly better and here are some photos I took from off the back porch-

Lots of fun but probably not going to pull me away from dollmaking.

Yesterday I had fun outing. A local fashion designer, Deborah Parker, invited me over to her studio to go through her scraps and see if there was anything I could use. Yes! I came home with 2 large bags full of wool, silk, linen, and some little pieces of cotton. Delicious! There are some very inspiring pieces in that pile- like, have you ever heard of wool corduroy? I hadn’t but now I have some to play with- it looks like perfect hair fabric to me.

Hurray- what a great way to start the year!
