visit with Salley

Salley Mavor came over for a visit today. She was in town to meet with her publisher. She is working on a book of nursery rhymes. She brought some of the pages to show me. They take your breath away with their details and craftsmanship. I took some photos-

this is a detail shot of the chair that the girl is sitting on-

do you see the embroidered detail on the shirt above? Amazing!

I love the bees in this one-

Stone wall of felt and beads. The gate has hooks and eyes for hardware-

And that rat! I love him!

This is what I’ve been working on-

I will post better photos onto the blog and list them on etsy once I get some decent photos.

Mr. April

Have you seen the Whip-Up calendar? It was one of the projects I’d alluded to over here. The request for an image was what inspired me to buy the new camera… which, btw, I am loving.

I am so proud to be part of it! And, with such great company!

Kathreen has been so supportive of my work and of other artists doing offbeat fiber arts. So, a HUGE thank you to Kathreen!

The calendar is available here. I just bought mine- with shipping from Australia it was $28.93.

forest sprite

This doll is what I’d imagined for my autumn color inspired girls. She has finally showed up!

She also has felted wool roving dreadlocks. They look completely different from the ones on Flower child. I used different kinds of wool- not on purpose. I have a bag of mixed colors of roving and there was a small ball of black- I think merino wool. I divided up the wool into “snakes” and ran them through the washing machine. They came out looking like slugs. Not what I was expecting, but I love them.

fairy tale girl

Her dress makes me think of fairy tales.

Maybe a Spanish or Latin American fairy tale.

Her dress is cashmere from the same sweater as the Autumn girl.

A bit of felt behind the button hole to stabilize it.

a little applique on the hem-

A top view of the felt roses in her hair.

It must be a good thing when I finish a doll and I think- How can I bear to part with it? That means I am truly happy with how it came out!

Let me know if you have any problems with the blog- we have moved to a different server and various little tweaks are happening. Sometimes that can cause “issues”. And huge aggrevation for me until I figure out all the very annoying new features. Arg!

autumn girl

My political word- just once every four years. I am Very, Very Happy today!

Finally- I finished a doll to post!

People ask me how much I plan out my projects beforehand. The answer is not much. Here is a classic scenario. My original idea was to make a group of autumn-color forest-impish girl dolls. The first one to take her own road was the flower girl. I made another girl with dreadlocks and made this dress for her. It looked completely wrong. So, I decided to finish up a few more girls and then I’d figure out if the dress would look better on someone else. So now, instead of a forest imp, I’ve got what looks to me like a little Irish girl who would love to be trying out some step dancing.

this photo is a little light but shows the details well.

voting day

I voted this morning. There was about a 15 minute wait and lots of excited energy. There were many newbies- people who didn’t know where to go. People in the wrong place. Everyone was cheerful and helpful.

It was a beautiful day today. Ben and I decided to take a vacation day and get away from the election until we might actually be able to hear some results. We drove down to a beach in Rhode Island.

I took off my shoes and walked in the sand. I put my feet in the ocean- brrr! I thought about feet memories versus head memories.

We went over to Quonochontaug Pond where we used to rent a cottage when the kids were little.

Tonight will be spent watching red and blue patches fill in on media maps. It will be such a relief to have this election finished and decided. Hopefully, tomorrow I will be able to settle down and get back to work- because that is how I’ve been feeling- unsettled. These girls are waiting for me to finish them up-

My daughter is going to the Obama event in Chicago- I will be very interested to hear her experience- sounds exciting and maybe a little scary!

oh, oh, oh… a very exciting week!

I have had a very exciting week. Lots of great stuff going on that resulted in me not spending enough time in the studio. Although that was more about me being distracted as opposed to being out and about.

You know Craft Magazine? Hee hee- I’m in it!

This is what it actually looks like when I open it-

hence the action shot above. Diane and Rachael did an amazing job on the article- I am so proud to be part of it.

Another exciting thing… I got a request for some hi-res images for a project (one more exciting thing that I will tell you about when there is more information) and that made me realize how totally inadequate my camera is for many fun things I’d like to do. I spent tons of time on Amazon, looking at many, many cameras. I went from thinking I’d buy this one (Canon A590IS) for $115 plus or minus to knowing I NEEDED this one (Canon G10) for $500. How does this happen?! I went down to Harvard Square this morning to see if I could find a copy of Craft Magazine. While I was there, I thought I’d go to a camera store and see if they had a G10 in stock that I could touch. Well, sure enough, they not only had it, it was on sale. I’ve got a new Baby! I’m just doing my part to help with the US economic crisis- hee!

a third exciting thing- new threads-

Yesterday I spent more hours then I thought possible picking out beautiful threads. These are danish flower cotton and I also got crewel embroidery wool. I am so grateful to receive such bounty. When I am given a gift like this, I feel it is my duty to make something beautiful from it- my way of saying thank you. This was my haul 2 years ago. I have enjoyed my bounty every time I have opened my drawer full of color!

There is other stuff too… not ready to be posted about though.  So many distractions! I will leave you with a flower photo taken with my new camera.
